Xabi gives reds fitness boost & dismisses transfer gossip

Xabi Alonso is expected to be fit for this Sunday’s away game at West Brom. The midfielder has been out with an ankle injury since Joey Barton’s vile lunge in the thrashing of Newcastle ten days ago. Manager Rafael Benitez confirmed on the official site: "Xabi was jogging today so if he progresses normally for the rest of the week I think he will be available for the weekend. "Xabi is a key player for us in the middle. It could have been a lot worse so I am really pleased to see him back after just one week."

Alonso has again endured transfer speculation today with a number of media outlets insisting the player will leave the club, with Arsenal renewing their interest in the midfielder. However his agent Ignacio Ibanez has dismissed the speculation.

Speaking with Sky Sports News he stated “I know nothing about these reports”

"As Xabi has always said he is happy at Liverpool and focused on them."
