English for Dummies: RANT

The press once again, presumably in an attempt to ‘sensationalise’ their articles, have been over indulging in phrases that do not accurately describe their stories. Recent point in quote is the Guardians article entitled “Kenny Dalglish begins his second coming at Liverpool with a rant”

‘Rant’, as previous boss Rafael Benitez knows all too well, is a word that has been over-used in describing Liverpool manager’s press conferences. Incredibly, even with my failed ‘O’ level, I knew better then the journalists (with their fancy degrees), on the correct usage of the word. So, wanting to help in any way possible, I decided to post a series of ‘Quick Help’ guides, to journalists who are unable to discern the ‘truth’ from ‘sensationalism’. A sort of 'English for Dummies' if you will.

Step 1 in this series is:

RANT
v. rant·ed, rant·ing, rants
v.intr.
To speak or write in an angry or violent manner; rave.
v.tr.
To utter or express with violence or extravagance: a dictator who ranted his vitriol onto a captive audience.
n.
1. Violent or extravagant speech or writing.
2. A speech or piece of writing that incites anger or violence:
3. A criticism done by ranting; A wild, incoherent, emotional articulation; To speak or shout at length in an uncontrollable anger; To criticize by ranting.
4. A rant is a speech or text that does not present a well-researched and calm argument; rather, it is typically an attack on an idea, a person or an institution. Very often rants lack proven claims. Such attacks are usually personal attacks.

With this in mind, you can view Kenny Dalglish's recent aforementioned 'rant' here

Dalglish backs Benitez

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has given his full support to manager Rafael Benitez and believes he is the man to get the Reds out of there current bad run of form. Benitez has come under fire from a vitriolic press this week who have practically demanded the head of Benitez, however the LFC Ambassador states that the club, players and fans must now show their support more then ever by sticking together.

"Everyone within the upper echelons of this club has no doubt whatsoever about Rafa - I know that for a fact," said Dalglish to the Official web site.

"Everybody at Liverpool Football Club knows Rafa is the right man to get the club through this.

"No-one is pumped up and panicking in any way, shape or form. Everyone is being as helpful and supportive as they possibly can be to the manager.

"Obviously, whether you're a manager or a player, you have to retain your confidence and belief in what you are doing.

"You have also got to retain your belief in each other. The manager has to retain belief in his players and the players must retain their confidence in the manager.

"It's very important that everybody sticks together to get themselves through this."

"Everybody's accountable. When you have success everybody takes their fair share of the credit – and rightly so. So when it goes badly the same thing must apply in reverse.

"People have made mistakes but it's how you react to them that's the most important thing.

"The other vitally important thing is that you must never allow other people to drive wedges between you and through various parts of the football club.

"Of course everyone must stand up and be counted – and then at least we'll be going in the right direction."

"The Liverpool supporters were really terrific.

"When Steven went off they raised the roof and tried to get the players going, because they know how important Fernando is and Steven is – and Glen Johnson too, who was out through injury.

"But the players can't depend on the supporters lifting them all the time – sometimes the players have to lift the supporters as well."

"If you are losing four games on the spin you're not going to be getting praise – but you can't take too much to heart what you read in the papers.

"Yes, there's criticism. Some will be constructive and Rafa will look at this and take it under his wing and say maybe that's right. Other parts he will totally dismiss.

"But there's no way Liverpool Football Club and the majority of people would want Rafa to go anywhere.

"Remember last year they beat Manchester United with Steven only playing 20 minutes and Fernando not playing at all. So if we did it last year why can't we do it this year?

"The players will need to stand up and be counted. But then everybody needs to do that.

"For anyone that has got any affiliation to Liverpool Football Club, anyone at all, then it's time for them to rally round and channel all their efforts in the one direction.

"That is to help the manager and the players to get the one result everybody wants. That's the only way to do it."

"You can understand the frustration of the supporters – but Liverpool supporters are absolutely fantastic at supporting the manager and the team.

"And it is in adversity when they are at their strongest."

"The only reason Kenny Dalglish is at Liverpool Football Club is because Rafa wanted him here.

"I know the support that a manager expects from his staff – because I've been there. And I like to think I'll give the boss the same support I would have expected. We have no other option but to stick together.

"Remember, the players that are playing now are the same players that came so close last year, bar Xabi Alonso. They don't suddenly become bad players – they just lose a bit of confidence.

"They know they are better players than it is looking at the minute. "Everybody knows that. But they have got to believe it."

Dalglish says new sponsor deal will help Rafa

Reds legend Kenny Dalglish believes the new £80m sponsorship deal that was officially announced today, can help Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez bring more trophy's to Anfield.
Speaking about the deal, the new club ambassador Dalglish said:

"Like every other Liverpool fan, I want the best assets of this club to be on the pitch - and this deal will help that," said Dalglish on the official site.

"If it can help Rafa and increase his budget - well that's what everyone wants.

"Success on the pitch leads to success off it and vice versa. It all leads to the same thing - a lot of happy Liverpool supporters. This is a fantastic deal for everybody."

Dalglish who met with executives at Standard Chartered prior to today's announcement believes the new partners fit perfectly with the clubs traditions.

"The size of this deal commercially is very important, but equally as important are the people involved," he said.

"Standard Chartered are good, solid people. I've met them before and they're very good."

"The importance of the support Liverpool have in the Far East is very important for them because they have their base there as well as the Middle East and Africa," he added.

"Our support out there was highlighted during our pre-season tour, and I think that time helped make up both minds that this would be a fantastic opportunity.

"This only endorses what a lot of people already knew - that this is one of the most important clubs in world football."

'King' Kenny returns home

I’ve been unable to get near my PC in the past couple of days and typically a couple of large news story’s break. So apologies in advance for the delay in these reports.

Friday evening brought about the news that many a kopite had been clamouring for. It was the return of former Reds idol ‘King’ Kenny Dalglish in the role of ambassador to Liverpool Football Club. The former player, captain and manager will also assume a senior role with the Academy. The official statement from the club was a simple one:

“Kenny Dalglish is to return to Liverpool FC, it was confirmed this afternoon.”

“Dalglish will assume a senior role at the Liverpool Academy and will also act as a Club ambassador working with the commercial side of the business around the world.”

Newly appointed Managing Director Christian Purslow said: "In our very first meeting Rafa and I agreed that we wanted to try and bring Kenny back to the club to help Rafa really drive forward our Academy which is at the heart of our plans for the future. We are delighted he has agreed to join us and I am sure he will be very successful in his new role back at the club."

Dalglish will be based at the Academy at Kirkby and will play a key role alongside Academy Director Frank McParland in driving forward the development of the youth site.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez speaking about the appointment to the official site said: "I am really pleased to have Kenny as a part of the staff. We were looking for someone who has a knowledge and a passion for the club and Kenny is the perfect choice."

"He will help at the Academy with the development of players and will also have an ambassadorial role at the club. If you're looking for somebody to go around the world on behalf of Liverpool Football Club then I don't know anybody better than Kenny.”

“When you talk to him about players and football systems it's clear he has a lot of experience. That's good for the club and also for the young players coming through.

"We are changing things at the Academy, we are bringing in new ideas and new people but we're keeping the spirit and the heart of the club. Kenny has played for the club, he's managed the club, he's done everything. He's a fantastic signing."

Dalglish said: "I spoke to Rafa a few months ago and things have progressed from there. Now that it has come to fruition I am very excited, but also a bit nervous.

"For the boss to put his trust in me is a great compliment and I am coming back as a very lucky person. When you leave a club you don't often have a chance to return, so I am fortunate for being given such a fantastic opportunity.

"Rafa has made a very brave decision to revamp the Academy. There are lots of positive things happening here and there is a real feel-good factor around the place. It's fantastic for me to be a part of that.

"People who come to the Academy should be delighted that Rafa is taking such an interest in the development of the young players. Everyone knows the most important team at the club is the first team and hopefully we can start producing players to challenge for a place in Rafa's plans. It won't happen overnight but I'm looking forward to working with Frank McParland and the rest of the Academy staff to do the best job I can."

“There's a lot of work to be done and I will do whatever is asked of me. I'm just so pleased to be back."

More coaching shake-up's brings Dalglish return closer

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is continuing his summer shake up of the academy with the departure of four of his coaches reports the Mail. “Gary Ablett is being replaced as reserve team manager after three years, another former player, Hugh McAuley, who guided the under 18s to the FA Youth Cup Final is also departing. Youth coaches Dave Lever and Dave Shannon are also leaving. Frank McParland will return to oversee the backroom set-up and former Barcelona and Olympiakos coach Jose Segura is taking over as Academy Director.” The wholesale changes appear to pave the way for Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish to return to the club as an “advisor or ambassador” claims the article. The story also states that “popular former midfielder Gary McAllister is also being linked with a coaching role.”

Dalglish pays tribute to Liverpool’s season

Former player and Kop idol Kenny Dalglish has praised Liverpool’s season. Speaking about the title race he told BBC Radio Merseyside: "They've pushed them a lot harder than they have in the previous three or four years. They can certainly be proud of their efforts this season. This year there has been a lot of optimism and we can look forward to next year."

Dalglish added: "It would have been very positive to win the Premier League but I think there's a lot of stability at the football club now. Maybe that wasn't here in October and November.”

"Rafa has signed a new contract and have Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and a lot of the younger players. I'm sure they'll be some people coming in and some going out. But the stronger [players] we get the better chance we will have."

Dalglish also reiterated his desire to rejoin the Reds "We'll just have to wait and see. If I can be of any help to this football club then I will be. If it's more helpful for me to be a supporter then fine. It's no problem, I don't have any grievances with anyone."

Academy director Hamberg’s departure clears way for Dalglish return

Liverpool Academy technical director Piet Hamberg (pictured right) is to leave the club at the end of the season reports the BBC. Hamberg, 55, joined Liverpool's academy in Kirkby two years ago from Swiss club Grasshoppers Zurich, where he was manager and technical director. The Dutchman, who replaced Steve Heighway in 2007, also had a playing spell at Ajax in the 1980s.

Hamberg's departure clearly opens the door for former manager Kenny Dalglish to return to the club. Dalglish has made no secret of the fact that he would be delighted to return to Liverpool "in whatever capacity".

Club captain Steven Gerrard would also love to see the man voted Liverpool’s greatest ever player return. Speaking to the Mirror recently he said "My first response to the news was, 'Great, get him in now' because the man is a legend. It's a great idea to get Kenny in because it would give the club a massive lift."

"Put it this way, if I was a young player again and a number of clubs wanted to sign me, if Kenny Dalglish came to me and asked me to sign for Liverpool then there is only one place I would go."

The Academy is expected to have major changes over the summer. Rafa Benitez recently appointed former Reds chief scout Frank McParland as Academy Director. It is believed the Reds boss has been far from happy with the youth set-up for some time, speaking recently in the Echo he said “Our idea for the Academy was very simple – to keep the things that are working well but also to change the things which we think that we can do better. I think that the young players will be really pleased with the changes that we are making and I think it will not be long before the improvements become very clear. Okay, we will need to see some time to see the results of everything but it will be clear from the very beginning that things will be a little bit different.”
