Gerrard hails Torres as the best striker in the world

Following his goals at the weekend Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been speaking about his devastating partnership with El Niño in today’s Daily Star. His first strike against West Ham was set up by Fernando Torres 1 minute 16 seconds into the match “He’s a top player. I’ve said it many times, he is very easy to play with. He doesn’t just score top goals, he sets them up as well. The frustrating thing for both of us is that we haven’t been on the pitch together far more. Going into next season it’s important that we both stay fit to give Liverpool the best chance of being successful because we feel if we are both fit and on top form we’ll cause defenders and teams many problems. It’s difficult to say we would have won more games if we had played more often together. Without sounding big-headed there is a confidence when we are both on the pitch that we can win football matches. When he is on top form I don’t think anyone will argue that he is the best striker in the world. To not have him fit is so frustrating, as his team-mate."

In an ominous warning to the rest of the Premiership next season Gerrard declared the partnership will get better “If we are both on the pitch and fit you’ll see many more goals as well. We enjoy playing together, we can both set each other up and both score goals. The partnership is certainly there and it can get better. There is an understanding there. We work with each other in training. It’s important in this team that you don’t just single myself and Fernando out. The whole team has been playing very well of late. The two holding midfielders have given me the platform to get forward and get goals.”

Gerrard is clearly enjoying life at Anfield at the moment also spoke about the possibility of more players coming in the summer “I think everyone has been chipping in with solid performances. It’s a pleasure to play in this team at the moment. We’ve shown this year we’ve made massive strides and there has been big progression. I think every squad, no matter how successful you are, still needs strengthening and changes. I don’t think this team needs many changes because the players in the squad are very good. If we can get a couple in and get stronger, of course we want them.”
