Mascherano will remain at Anfield

Midfielder Javier Mascherano is prepared to commit his immediate future to Liverpool reports the Telegraph. Manager Rafael Benitez has spoken with the Argentinean midfielder and explained how important he is to the team especially in light of the recent departure of Xabi Alonso. The midfield enforcer has been the subject of press speculation all summer with Barcelona players and club officials publicly speaking about the player. But Benitez insists he is integral to the assault of the Premiership title this term.

"I have spoken to him before but now he realises he is a very, very important player for us," said Benitez. "He is a key player, he knows he has to be an example and he is ready. It was difficult before for him but now he has seen Alonso go and so he knows he must stay," said the Reds boss in the Telegraph.

"He played much better against Atletico than he has before," added Benitez. "I am confident he is more focused now. The last week has changed the situation a lot and he is playing much better."
"I am confident he is 100% focused," Benitez adds in the Guardian.
