Spearing aims to impress Rafa

Highly rated youth team player Jay Spearing is hoping that his actions in the pre-season could give Rafa a selection dilemma when the new season begins. The player who recently signed a new three year contract which will see him remain at Anfield until 2012 played in the first half of Wednesday night’s match against St Gallen.

Spearing, speaking about the match said: “I loved every minute on Wednesday,” reports the Echo.

He added: “Any chance I get I’ve got to impress. I want to show Stevie (Gerrard) that I am capable of playing alongside him and I need to show that to Rafa Benitez as well.”

“I want to make the step up as soon as possible. I’ve been in the reserves for a few years so I need to push on.”
